Welcome to Elder Musings.  As you might guess, this blog is written from the perspective of an elder.  What’s an elder, you say?

There are two ways to grow old.  One way is to become increasingly inwardly focused, to withdraw, to remain static in a constantly changing world.  People who grow old this way become curmudgeons, angry with the world and the people in it, and I daresay, are the sort of people who want to turn the clock back to “better times.”  The outcome is to grow old and die, unhappy with the circumstances of life.

Or, as the older person, one embraces life ahead.  Diversity and change are to be celebrated, not feared.  The very act of growing old itself is a journey to be celebrated, a journey into a deeper understanding of self and relationship with the rest of the world.

To be an elder is to embrace life-long learning and to use the wisdom gained as teachers for others who are on the path.  It is a move away from the ego and materialism to an expression of Self and spirituality.

About My Website

This blog is my voice.  It exists because life has taught me many lessons as I’ve grown to elderhood.  Through this blog, I wish to share what I have learned in the hopes that what I know will move you further down the path of your own journey.

I wish to tell you of my opinions on a variety of subjects, in a way that might shape the way you think.  And I hope to tell stories that make you laugh, that provoke, that make you think.

I am blessed to have a mentor in my life.  At one point, I asked him, “How is it that no matter what I know or learn, you always seem to know even more?”

He replied, “We are all on the path of life.  We each have a lantern.  Just as you are following my lantern, I, too, am following the lantern in front of me.  And, there is someone right behind you, following your lantern.”

Please feel free to send me comments and submissions for posting.

Thank you, and blessings to all.

Jesus and Plato

In his writings, the “theory of forms”, Plato put forth the notion that the reality we perceive is but an illusion, a shadow, at best, a part of what perfection might be.  A “form” is a blueprint for perfection. For example, we might see a kitchen table, or a coffee table, or a dining room …
